At the turn of every year, I carve out space to spend with clients in one-on-one sessions, small groups, and workshops dedicated to intentional reflection. I’ve been doing this for so long I truly can’t remember not doing it. In these sessions, I focus on being "intentional" rather than simply attaining "goals." For me, being intentional means taking mindful, action-oriented steps, backed by a secret weapon that keeps you on track: a tried and true tracking app, KIP. Neuroscience and motivational psychology show that working toward intentions on a daily, consistent basis triggers dopamine release, activating the brain's reward system while enhancing well-being and a sense of purpose.
The formula I use for an "Intentional Year" is a five-step process. This month, I am sharing the first two steps to give you the opportunity to play with these ideas until they really "ping" for you, until you feel them viscerally in your body.
Step 1: The Feeling It starts with a feeling, not a word. I begin with my eyes closed, reflecting on how I want to feel throughout the coming year. This happens only after I’ve looked back at the previous year to identify what I want to shift emotionally.
I Want To Feel…
Step 2: The Theme Next, I identify a theme I want to incorporate into the year. This theme supports me in being mindful and, ultimately, successful in cultivating that desired feeling.
My Theme Is…
Both the feeling and the theme should be distilled down to a single word. If you find yourself struggling to narrow it down, I suggest dialoguing with someone who can ask the deeper questions, helping you get closer to the shifts you want to make. Next month, we will close out your intentional 2026 roadmap by sharing the final three steps and tie in a creative project you can dive into!
See you then.
With love,
Kendra
