Carpe Diem Graduates

June 11th, 2013 | Posted in June 2013 by

Ann and Caitlin COMPThe youngest of my children received her high school diploma on May 31st. The week was filled with various notable celebrations and Sunday we ended the week with her grad party celebration.

Between the flurry of activity and relatives staying at our home, I did not allow enough quiet moments to reflect on what this monumental event meant for me. Now having a little more than a week under my belt to digest, I am feeling the enormity of the emotion that is associated with this event – for both of us.

I had at least five people look at me with a panicked look and ask, “What will you do when she is gone?” The look scared me more than the question to be honest. So I sat in reflection about my role of the past 31 years…a mother, a teacher, a nurse, a guide, a witness, a friend, a warrior, the list can go on and on, as we parents become the best at shape-shifting during this period of their – and our lives. I recognized that I measure my years of life by their years of life and what stage they are in and where they are. All of a sudden I will not be participating in the same way as I always have. I have lived more years as a fulltime Mother than I lived without that responsibility as an adult.

This fall will mark, for the first time in my adult life, that I will be without a child in the house. I am trying to view it like my daughter is viewing the next step in her life – with excitement, anticipation, joy, and even a touch of ambivalence. I am trying to not only help her plan her next steps but be present with what my own next steps are, carefully being aware of the slight animation in my heart as I think about the day I will pull away from her dorm steps in early August and drive 1300 miles home, to my now empty “nest”.

What I know for certain is that although graduation of the last child is a transformative time for them, it is for we parents as well. There is a space that opens up for us to allow for yet again, a new beginning. My gut tells me to be like a child and embrace curiosity, dare greatly and step into the freedom that is now mine as well. Like I am telling her, I am telling myself, “ANY and ALL things are possible”. What are the things I can address on my bucket list? Who are the people I want to spend more time with? What is calling to me? What is next for my business I so love?

So as with any graduation of the last child, we celebrate this proud milestone they have achieved, with great joy in our hearts. And a week later I am celebrating my graduation, a milestone for myself, with great joy and anticipation of “what’s next” and even perhaps a glass of wine to toast:

Special Announcement:

I am excited to share with you that I am going to be interviewed on the VoiceAmerica EmPOWERment internet radio program “Choose Your Energy: Change Your Life!” next Wednesday, the 19th of June! I would love to share the experience with you!

I will be asking the question, “What if you already possessed within you an internal roadmap that points the way to living out your life calling?”  Most of us question our own instincts and turn to outside guidance for direction in life. Yet behind all of this is a fear of trusting ourselves and being seen for who we really are. If you are ready to discover your own internal guidance system, this show is for you! I will discuss with Deborah Jane Wells, host of the show, why the solution to our challenges comes through awakening our internal guide–an infallible spirit–the one that believes we are worthy of our highest aspirations and can lead us to live fearlessly. We’ll explore how each of us is capable of this gradual awakening, and how it can help us live out our life purpose. I will also introduce Caroline Myss’ concept of the Sacred Contract–a tool that helps us demystify the events, relationships, challenges and opportunities we encounter in this life.

The show will air live on June 19th. All shows are recorded, so you will be able to listen to the show recording after June 19th here.

About the Show: On Choose Your Energy: Change Your Life, Deborah Jane Wells and her guests help you become more insightful, creative, committed and productive through practical strategies and tools based on their own personal journeys and those of their clients.

Deborah has pursued a lifelong passion for the transformative power of love. She helps people who are stuck in the hamster wheel approach to life. Trapped by fear and the mistaken belief that busy-ness is the same as purpose, they can’t stand the way they’re living, but feel powerless to stop.

As they work together, her clients discover that when you fall in love with yourself, everything else falls into place, personally and professionally. You get unstuck, reclaim your personal power and recapture your zest for living. When love transforms your relationship with yourself, it transforms your personal life, your work and the World.

We hope you will join us for this special event!
